  Racial   Trauma
&
Yoga

Yoga can be employed as a modality to promote the mind, body, and spirit's recovery from the effects of racial trauma. Mindfulness practices and trauma-informed yoga are tools available to us on our healing journeys. Yoga encourages us to discharge accumulated stress and anxiety, build resilience, engage the body's relaxation response, and strengthen executive functioning. Within a safe space - where stories stay and lessons leave - you are welcomed to explore and examine areas of stored trauma within you.

I'm Meghan, and I have been leading yoga sessions for over seven years. Upon moving to Richmond, I became involved in advocacy and rehabilitation efforts around racial healing in our city. I witnessed the need to equip survivors of racial trauma in a more holistic way with actionable, portable and accessible healing modalities.

In 2018, I earned 200hr certification as a Yoga Instructor through the Integral Yoga Therapy Institute. Courses in Stress Management Theory and Practice (2021) and Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training (2019) further empowered me to design trauma-informed sessions. As a current member of the Yoga Alliance, I am continually researching innovative approaches to instruction.

These certifications introduced me to the concept of neuroplasticity , the brain's ability to adapt and change its structure and function in response to new situations, behavior, or environmental changes. Brain plasticity is what motivates me to serve survivors ( and perpetrators ) of racial trauma. The science is proven  - when novel information is effectively presented, our minds literally transform. The last four letters in "plasticity" are "city", and I believe Richmond is a city full of citizens seeking a renewed existence.

I am not a counselor, psychiatrist or therapist, but I have seen first-hand the powerful effects that yogic practice can have on our concept of healing. Blending knowledge from my educational background in African and African-American Studies and Special Education has led to the creation of a program informed to reach people with a spectrum of needs.
